Success is in Your Ability to Adapt

Success is in Your Ability to Adapt

Sep 27, 2023

People often think that Stability, Homeostasis, and "Control" is the goal of a "Successful" Life.

I'd like to counter that.

I don't think the goal of life is Stability, but instead in being able to adapt to change, where you can accept "new normals" on a regular basis and be able to use them to your advantage (eventually).

The goal isn't Homeostasis, it's Allostasis.

It's not about getting to a certain point, stopping, and trying to stay there, but instead, using the definition of Allostasis, "Achieving stability through change."

Darwin's Survival of the Fittest is often seen as one's ability to dominate over their environment and other organisms, but it's true definition is summed up by the line, "An organism's ability to adapt to their environment," is "the Fittest."

I think it bears repeating, but it's one's ability to Adapt to their environment, to roll with the changes and adapt, that sets you up for the highest likelihood of success.

For example, with working out over the years, the reasons and seasons I've trained through have included:

  • Training for basketball
  • Training for "looks," which meant training for muscle size
  • Training as a way to experiment with new information I was learning (every certification, over 20 through the years, I experimented with new training modalities)
  • Training to overcome injuries
  • Training for health
  • Training for maintenance
  • Training for weight loss

I've trained at home, at different gyms, while traveling, at different rates (from 1 to 2 times per week to 7 days per week), and through different phases of life, from early teen years to my early 40's, and the life and body changes that go along with all of these reasons and seasons. The goal is, and has been, to end up at a place where I was "stable" through all of these changes.

Success therefore, is not about total Control, but understanding the Give and Take of Control. The ability to flow and move with the changes of life, while being Sturdy enough to stay true to who you are and who you want to BE.

The key word here is Be.

Who do you want to BE?

What you HAVE might change, but who you are, even as physical deterioration may occur (it happens to everyone eventually), who you are, can remain sturdy and/or improve with time. Who you are can improve with setbacks and practice.

The question is, do you know how to improve and remain stable through change?
